New Frontier Scholarship UACCB (click here)

In recognition of the public school mergers and the changes in school district boundaries, and to offer more opportunities for neighboring students, UACCB is offering a new scholarship program called “New Frontier Scholarships.” These scholarships will be awarded to students whose official residence is outside Independence County, but who graduated from or are currently enrolled in a school district whose geographic boundaries include parts of Independence County. Eligible districts include: Cave City/Evening Shade, Concord/Wilburn, Hillcrest (Lynn/River Valley) and Midland. The amount of the scholarship will be the difference between the out-of-district and in-district tuition rates up to a cap of 15 hours per semester and will be available to graduates.

A Call for Empathy and Prayer

One of the prominent students on the Yellville-Summit football team, Kymball Duffie, died in a car accident on 9-11. Kymbal was a junior and his younger brother, a freshman, is in Talent Search. His mother is the counselor at Yellville-Summit middle school and I work with her for the ETS program. The school, town, and family are all devastated so I would ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

We’re back. So long, ice.

icicles resizedI hope all are safe and sound and with electricity. Just got ours back last evening. I know that most of you missed about a week of school. It was interesting, but now it’s time to get back on the tracks and think about school again (and all that goes along with it). Some reminders in case you forgot over the unexpected break: College goal Sunday is February 22 at 2:00 PM. For information on the location nearest you, click here. The next ACT test is on April 4 and the registration deadline is February 27. Make sure you see your ETS counselor or guidance counselor for a waiver if you need one. Another Scholarship Opportunity!

USDA Scholarship Here is another scholarship that was brought to my attention. It too came from the newspaper. This one if for students who plan on going into any of the agricultural fields (and there are many). This one is a full ride; it pays for books, tuition, room & board, fees, and use of a laptop and printer. It’s also renewable for four years. If you plan to go into any type of agricultural field OR a related science (botany, wildlife management, animal science, forestry, the list goes on), then check out this amazing scholarship here!

ACT Info

The next ACT Test date is April 4, 2009. In order to take it on that test date, you must register by February 27, 2009 - unless you pay a late fee. Also, remember that as a Talent Search member you automatically qualify for the ACT Fee Waver. You are allowed two of these wavers in your lifetime. If you need a waver, see me when I visit your school or your guidance counselor might have some too. When you fill out the waver form, just check the box that says "student is a member of a Federal TRIO program". Before taking the ACT, be sure to get a good night sleep and have a breakfast that isn't loaded with sugar - but you already do that anyway, right? ;)

It's 2009 And That Means...

The new FAFSA is available. What is the FAFSA? Let's just say it is step number one for ALL things financial aid. Where can I get more info on it? Right here: www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will be able to complete it when your parents have gotten all their tax information from 2008. Even if they haven't yet filed their taxes, you can still use estimates. Don't wait! It's free money we're talking about here!
